About Snow Day Calculator
Predicting school cancellations and providing actionable winter safety metrics through scientific modeling and real-time atmospheric datasets.
Who We Are
Snow Day Calculator was founded by a team of meteorology enthusiasts, data engineers, and educators who realized that traditional winter weather forecasts don't answer the one question students, parents, and teachers ask most: "Will school be cancelled tomorrow?"
By combining real-time National Weather Service (NWS) APIs, local geographic thresholds, and historical school board patterns, we created a mathematical engine that estimates the likelihood of school closures. Our goal is to bring transparency and analytical rigor to winter planning.
Our Algorithmic Approach
Our calculator does not guess. It processes active, real-time meteorological metrics to calculate school closure probabilities:
- Snow Accumulation & Intensity: Measures predicted snowfall depth during critical commute hours (5:00 AM - 9:00 AM).
- Ice & Freezing Rain: Identifies glaze accumulation which is the primary driver of school bus grounding.
- Extreme Wind Chill: Evaluates active frostbite and hypothermia safety thresholds for students waiting outdoors.
- Local Infrastructure Sensitivity: Calibrates predictions dynamically depending on whether a town is in a high-snowfall zone (e.g., Minnesota) or a low-infrastructure zone (e.g., Georgia).
Editorial Standards
All articles, safety calculators, and guides are written by weather analysts and verified against official municipal engineering standards and NWS meteorological documents.
